If you have decided you would like to have your own model railroad you will have a whole heap of ideas running through your head about what type of scenery you want, the types of engines and rolling stock and all sorts of buildings and features you could add but before you do any of that, stop.

The very first thing you need to think about is what scale you plan to use. The different scales relate to the size of the entire layout and all of the items within it from people to railroad engines. If you want to pack a lot into a small space go for one of the small model railroad scales such as ‘n’ guage. This will allow you to have a comprehensive railroad layout in a fairly small space. If you are really pushed for space you could consider ‘z’ scale which is so tiny you could have a small layout on a bookshelf but remember that the smaller the scale the less detail you will be able to see.
