He wrote aircraft reviews for pay.

My father learned how to fly when he was in the military, his job was to fly supplies to the soldiers at the front line once a week. When he became a civilian he desperately wanted to own a small aircraft of his own, however with a wife and four children it was a difficult proposition. My father was able to circumvent some of that by writing small aircraft reviews for a national airplane magazine. They would secure a plane for him to fly once a week and he would take it out for a couple of hours and then write a review on it. The best part was he got paid for it and eventually saved enough to purchase his own airplane.
