Thomas Edison is probably the most well known and successful inventor of all time. He applied for and received his first patent at the age of 21. He went on to get more than 1,000 patents on his various inventions. Patents give the owners of an invention the exclusive right to own their inventions and make money off of them. Many things can receive a patent including machines, computer programs and designs. Large companies are constantly trying to create new things to help people and make more money. Pharmaceutical, chemical and technology companies are vying for the next great invention to put them ahead of their competitors.
