One advantage over the phone calls that live chat offers is that you can do it and no one can overhear you. As long as you are fairly secure with your computer safety, you can chat away in privacy no matter where you are. Sometimes that is the major reason why folks turn to chat rather than the phone — one or the other of the chatters needs to keep his or her end of the conversation private. Online chatting can offer privacy that phone calls cannot. They can also allow for conversations when conversations would not be acceptable — think college library.
