Billionaire Ted Turner truly got his start in sailing. He owned his own ship and Turner sailed during the day so I guess he could be viewed as a day skipper. The goal of rya courses is to make sure people have a firm enough handle on whether they are proficient enough to handle a boat by themselves. You can take basic sailing course on how to handle the boat while at sea and you can also take courses on how to properly park your boat as a day skipper.
You certainly don’t want to make a bunch of preparations and end up buying a very expensive boat that could get away from you one day simply because you did not tie the boat down properly. Some organizations who offer sailing courses consider learning the basics of the boat a Level One course while others may consider the boat positioning to be Level 2 Courses. Gaining certification from a rya course brings you instant credibility in the sailing world, others sailors will know that you know what you are talking about when you are out there on the high seas. It is a traditional course with an instructor and assignment that you typically do have to pay for out of your own pocket unless you get a grant of some kind. Grants can be helpful during the educational process.
Rya courses are particularly important for the navigation skills that they can teach you. As a day skipper navigation could be very important for you. You don’t want your crew to know that you don’t know where you are going or otherwise there could be a coup. They would want to replace you with someone who paid more attention during sailing courses.
